Financial Aid
This page provides information about applying for financial aid for 2009-2010.

Doctor of Medicine Program

To apply for financial aid for academic year 2009-2010 we encourage newly admitted students to apply as soon as possible after January 31, 2009. Upper-class students should apply before May 1, 2009. You can apply on-line with no paper hassles.
  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the Web at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Upper-class students may complete the Renewal FAFSA at this same site. Be sure to use our school code of E00161 for the Duke University School of Medicine. In a few weeks you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). The Office of Financial Aid will then be able to electronically retrieve this information as well.
  2. Complete the Need Access form at http://www.needaccess.org/. For purposes of the schools' need based funds, the student is not viewed as financially independent of parents. Both parents and student information should be provided on the Need Access. Parental information will be used to determine grant eligibility each year of enrollment. If you have already completed the Need Access and you need to add Duke Medical School, you may go to their website or call 1-800-282-1550
  3. Mail signed copies of both parents' and student's 2008 federal tax returns, all attachments, schedules and copies of W-2s to the Office of Financial Aid.
We do not make awards with an incomplete application nor estimated awards. Students whose parents file taxes after April 15 will not receive an award until the final copy of the tax return is received.

Students only applying for Stafford Loans should only submit the FAFSA and student tax return.

Physician Assistant Program

Financial aid sessions are scheduled at the time of your admission interview with detailed information on how to apply. Funding for the program is predominately loan. Most students borrow the $20,500 Federal Stafford Loan ($8,500 subsidized and $12,000 unsubsidized). After the Stafford loan, students may turn to the Graduate PLUS loan or a private alternative loan usually through the same Stafford lender.

The interest rate on Stafford loans are currently at a 6.8% fixed rate. The Grad PLUS loan is currently fixed at 8.5% and requires a credit check. Private alternative loan rates run slightly higher and are based on the prime or LIBOR rate.

Limited scholarship funds are available and are awarded through your program’s Admission Committee.
